A Baby Shower For the 4th child?

by Janet
(United States)

I am 21 years old, and my mom, who is 39 just found out she is pregnant. This would be her fourth child, but the youngest right now is 9 yrs., which means she doesn't have baby stuff.

I would like to throw her a shower, but I don't know if it really is appropriate or not. Please help!

Our Answer:

Hi Janet! Thank you for submitting your question. A baby shower would be a perfect way to celebrate the new baby. You are totally within etiquette rules to throw her one.

Since there is such a big gap in age from the last child, she is definitely going to need some help in getting restocked for the new baby.

You might know some people who feel it is inappropriate to throw her one since it is not her first child. But etiquette rules have changed over the years and it is ok to throw her a party. Every child is a gift and deserves a celebration.

Whether it is elaborate party or a small gathering of close friends and family, the fact that you cared enough to give her a baby shower will mean the most to her.

Best of luck!

Every child deserves to be celebrated
by: Gloria

I say go for it! I believe every child deserves to be celebrated. I am having a baby shower next month for my 4th child. It has been 4 years since the last baby and we got rid of all of the baby stuff with our last baby. We are starting from scratch and need everything. I am so lucky to have good friends who are handling all the details for us. So excited for our new addition to the family!

Kind of fun!
by: Valerie

A daughter throwing her mom a baby shower is kind of fun! You are so sweet to want to throw her one. :) I think it should be pretty well received because it has been 9 years since she had her last baby and she is 39. She will definitely need supplies for the new baby at this point. If you do it as an open house baby shower, it can be a casual party where guests can drop in and visit as their schedule allows. Good luck!
