Baby Shower At The Mom To Be's House

Is it okay to have the baby shower at the mommy's house?? This will be her third baby and will be a relaxed occasion.

Our Answer:

Hi there,

Thanks for your etiquette question. Traditionally, baby showers are not usually held at the mom to be's house. They are usually held at the home of the hostess, a restaurant, country club, church, or park.

This is something that has been set in etiquette for quite a while. I think it is mainly because of not wanting to appear like the mom to be is really the one throwing the party in disguise (which is not allowed in baby shower etiquette).

There are some circumstances in which people have thrown the baby shower at the mom's house...for more space, lack of a better place to have it, convenience with moving gifts, and in the case that the mom to be is on bed rest.

It is also ok to have it at the mom's house for a "meet and greet" or a "sip and see" once the baby arrives.

P.S. If you do decide to hold it at the mothers house, make sure that the hostesses are there to set up and clean up so she does not have the burden to do so.

Good Luck planning the baby shower!!

My baby shower was held at my house
by: Anonymous

I had my baby shower at my house. My house was the most central location for the guests and it was large enough to accommodate everyone. As long as the expecting mom is not hosting the party, there should be no problems with it. My hostesses were great. They handled everything and let me relax and enjoy the party. Hope that helps!

Bed Rest
by: Cynthia

I was on bed rest, so they changed the baby shower location to my house. It was originally supposed to be held at the hostess's house. But I was on bed rest the last 2 months of my pregnancy. It was still early enough that they were able to change the location of the baby shower on the invitations. Most people knew I was on bed rest. We had a great turn out and it was really fun to see everyone.

I don't see a problem with it
by: Anonymous

As long as someone else is hosting, I don't see a problem at all with holding the baby shower at the mom-to-be's house. Celebrities do it all the time. ;) Sometimes the expecting mom's house is larger, or more comfortable, or the closer location for the guests to travel to.
